Deranged – Interview (2016)

From L to R: Nicolás Muñoz (Guitars,Vocals),Nicolás Castro (Drums),Matias Ramirez (Bass),Miguel Araneda (Guitars,Vocals (backing)

Here is a chat with Nicolás Muñoz from Deranged an upcoming thrash band that I reviewed earlier this year and was really impressed on their sound,if you like that old school sound give this band an ear they bring it to the hilt.

ECM – Thanks for your time and can you give me a brief history of the band?

NM – Without knowing anyone around here, was a summer day at the end of 2013, a typical school day on the bus spoke to a thrasher (at that time) without knowing him, I asked if he knew a drummer, and I was introduced to Nicolas Castro (Deranged’s actual drummer). At the end of 2013 in Santiago it was organizing a “Total Thrash” was then that Nicolas had the same passion and feeling for Thrash and decided to go to see this recital. We arrived back to Concepcion with Nicolas and felt very motivated by seeing that THRASH METAL still standing in those places, we decided to try a couple of rehearsals, everything went well and was there when it began to take shape what is now known as Deranged . The hardest thing at first was getting our Thrash Metal taken seriously, in a city where the genre is dead and attempts to ” Thrash ” that were made here left much to be desired for local bangers.

ECM – So what are some of your inspirations as far as bands?

NM – Slayer, Exodus, Metallica, Testament, Sadus, Vio-lence, Forbidden.

ECM – Let’s talk about the EP,when I first heard it I got this old school vibe from it,it even brought back memories of the past with the way it was recorded has anybody ever told you about this?

NM – Yes, many people told us that sounds very old school, that sounded dirty but with an eighties sound. We were cautious about that, we love the eighties sound and wanted to sound as similar as possible.

ECM – Alright so when you guys come up with making your music does the whole band contribute? what;s the process?

NM – The process of composition of all songs was made by Nicolas Muñoz, although some structures were modified until the recording, except “Hidden Stabs” in which all the members contributed riffs and structures.

ECM – I seen you got a Russian label that distributes the release how did this come about and have you gotten good response from it?

NM – We contacted Zombie Records, we showed them the ep and immediately said yes. The response was good, people from Europe contacted us about that release and they liked it a lot.

(Zombie Records cassette version cover)

ECM – So how has the Chilean scene reacted to the band since it has been out? I figure it must be good since the thrash scene there is one of the best in the world.

NM – Overall pretty good, especially for the more central parts of Chile (Santiago and fifth region), they quite often invite us to play in those places. But here in our city, they do not appreciate us so much, we can say that we are the only band of this style here.

ECM – How was the Total Thrash Festival back in June? I seen the list of bands that played and it was impressive.

NM – It was good, but to be a festival with such good bands, there were very few people, but it may be that just at that date Chile played for the America´s Cup… We finished playing and soon came the game and they put a giant screen for all the crowd saw the game… hahahaha.

ECM – What can we expect from the band in the future?

NM – We are currently focused on the single that will come out soon. Then comes the composition for the disc, there are many ideas turning, Deranged continues on the same line, making fast and violent Thrash Metal, now with riffs with a obscure touch (think something like Hell Awaits, for example) Stay tuned to the band.

ECM – For the people that want to get your material what should they do and will you have any merchandise in the future like shirts, patches, etc.

NM – To acquire material, you can write a private message to our Facebook or by e-mail to: and yes, a run of T-shirts and patches of the EP ‘’Defacing World’’ will come out soon.

ECM – Ok Nicolas thanks for your time again and any last words you would like to share?

NM – Thanks to you and those who have taken the time to read this interview, the people who interested in our metal, people who believed in us and supported us from the beginning, who are adamant listening moving and doing THRASH METAL and not carried away by fashions. Cheers Thrashers!!!!!

Sangre Negra – Bruma Primigenia (2016)

Sangre Negra
Release date:April 4th, 2016

Here is the first demo by this one man project by Trauko (Ritual Oscuro,ex-Eltun),it’s a four track ritual.

Ritual de Fuego (Ritual Fire),opens this and it is a great piece to my ears as i was really hammered by it’s pure volume and it’s not your average sounding black metal,to me this is some raw shit that sooths my soul.Oscuras Revelaciones del Brujo (Dark Revelations of the Warlock),this one has a real old school feel to it and the vocals on here really stand out compared to the previous due to the production but all is good as I got this war like feeling from the riffage on here, very catchy stuff.Negros vientos de oscura guerra (Black Winds of Dark war),on here the pace slows down but the aggression is still there in it’s own nature and the vocals make this one as you can hear the screams of war written hell throughout the track, and to finish this ritual we have Bruma Primigenia (Primal Fog) which pounds into your brain from the start but does slow down from time to time and there is a guest vocalist on here (Nahaul) that adds a bit of flair to it and the ending is kind of strange because it justs ends with no sign of it.

This might not be for everybody as those that know me know that I’m not the biggest black metal fan around and it really needs to hit that right spot for me and this did as it kept me interested throughout the whole thing, the production on here is very raw so don’t expect perfection and that is good sometimes like it is on here.I will be doing an interview with Trauko very soon so keep an eye out for that.

Rapture – Scourge of Blasphemy (2016)

Release date:April 9th, 2016

As I was starting to think this might be a quiet year compared to last year along comes this band Rapture from Maipú and this is their first release, a three song demo of crushing death metal.

Scourge of Blasphemy, the title and track start this out and from the beginning this is right in your face as everything is spewed in your face as it should be,a well executed opener that should please anybody into straightforward shit and the lyrics are brutal as well.In the Name of God,this one is my favorite on here as it’s a punisher just like the previous one and the way these guys blend the vocals on here sounds like pure hell as it never lets up ripping leads as well some really good stuff here maniacs! In Der Gaskammer closes this out and it’s just as good as everything else and a little breaks that are thrown in adds to the brutality on here,a very catchy tune that kept me pinned into it,good stuff.

For a first demo this is as good as it can get you could say, the production is perfect and I hope to hear more in the near future from this band because they bring the goods.

Plaguelord: Rhythm guitar/vocals

Scorcher: Lead guitar/additional vocals

Incarnator: Bass

Necrohammer: Drums

Concatenatus – Aeonic Dissonances Beyond Light’s Consumption (2016)

Release date:April 5th, 2016

Concatenatus are a two piece band that play atmospheric black/doom metal,I recently got contacted by one of the members to checkout their latest offering, and I did some research on them and they are pretty well known over in Europe as they just came back from a tour there.

But onto this EP which has three tracks and this whole opus has so much going on,that I’ll just say it has everything you would want in this genre from black metal vocals and some blast beats along with the heavy doom as well and some anthemic vocals that are thrown in as well.this is some really dark evil music especially these screams that are on here that will make you feel like you’re in a torture chamber, Aeons, the opener just sets the mood for the rest of it but this is my favorite and a lot is going on here as this runs almost 8min.Barren Knowledge,is a whole different story as it has an acoustic guitar and the vocals are eerie as well with sound in the background that flow well as it goes into Hodie mihi, Cras Tibi which brings me back to the band’s sound as there is plenty of everything mentioned earlier, and the anthemic vocals really stand out as well as the atmospheric tone really shines on here plus the lyrics.

I will say I had to give this a few spins before I actually got the feel of what was going on,but in the end it’s good for what it is and it should please anybody into this kind of material,I have a feeling this band may break out real soon or after a full length is released, contact Totenmusik and see if they have any copies left of the cd version that has this and their first demo on one.

Mevak – Destroy Your Enemies (2016)

Release date:June 11, 2016

Here is another new thrash band that just released their first demo, and here we have four tracks of pure headbanging pleasure for your skull.

It starts out with Intro (Mosh on Hell),and I must say this is some pretty solid shit right from the start then the break that takes off as the this killer growl comes in and sets the mode for the rest of the track, the vocals are sick as fuck very dirty sounding which really adds to their sound, excellent opener, next is the title track Destroy Your Enemies, which has this crunchy riffage but then it explodes into a driver of a track and you gotta love the raw production on here as the drums really standout and it gives you a feeling you’re right there, this was meant to be played loud!this really is a killer track all the way through a perfect crusher. Chaos Around Me,starts out with a heavy bassline then the drums, but then all hell breaks loose as the rest of the band join in, then halfway through there is a bass part that really added flavor to this one,so far so good.and on to the closer We are Fort, another one with the bass opening, and this one is a bit different in the beginning but it really gets good at the end after another bass part then we have some really crunchy part that I thought was perfect as it really made this one out for me.

This is really good offering for this young band, the mix on the production could of been a bit better as sometimes you might hear something being drowned out,but it really doesn’t matter because it gives it a more of a live effect, like I said play it loud!

By the way check out their Bandcamp page to get this for free and the lyrics are there as well and they add to the pleasure.

Pentagram – Reborn 2001 (VHS Rip)

Pentagram - Reborn 2001 Front Cover vhsPentagram - Reborn 2001 back cover vhs

I uploaded my copy of this legendary concert just to show how better the quality is compared to the one that was released on “Under the Spell of the Pentagram” compilation in 2008,I felt ripped off when I bought that release expecting the same quality but instead it’s shit! I even have those other two video clips that were added and they are even better than what was on here.

Recorded live at their reunion show on Sunday May 27th, 2001 at “Teatro Providencia” along with Dorso and Necrosis.this featured all the original members of the band except Alfredo Peña (bass) who committed suicide in 1990,so Juan Francisco Cueto ex- Criminal took on the duties.

Released on Picoroco Records, I doubt that this will ever see a real official release on dvd as Eduardo “Picoroco” Navarrete passed away in 2005.

Amenaza -EP (2016)

Release date:April 13th, 2016

Amenaza which means threat in english are another new thrash band out of Santiago, and this is their first five track EP release, they sing in spanish but don’t let that get in the way of giving them a listen.

En Pie de Guerra (Up in Arms),gets the ball rolling and right from the start you can hear this an all out thrash attack! and the subject matter on this track is pretty good that it’s against the cops, but back to the music the vocals are nothing new on here they sound like some other bands playing thrash these days with the chorus chants to boot and if you like leads they are all here, good opener.Al Margen de la Sociedad (Beyond the Pale),another very catchy track from the start with crunchy riffs and you can hear the bass as well the production on here is excellent!and again great lyrics about not falling for the lies of government and all that other shit.Testigos de la Aniquilación (Witnesses Annihilation),so far this could be the slowest track but by no means is it a snoozer, the lyrics are what made this interesting to me,it’s about how humanity thinks it’s superior over the animal kingdom and doesn’t give a shit about it,yes this is a thrasher no doubt as it got heavier in the break when the leads started going off and all the way to the end.Violenciadicto (Violence Addict),with title like this you would think it would shred but instead this track kind of bombed for me to much a groove feeling to it but in the end it got thrashy. Al Paredón (To the Firing Wall),the closer,it’s a bit different than the earlier tracks just because there is so much going on from the rhythm section and then they throw in that dreaded groove sound that really kind of killed this for me,unfortunately.

This band has it’s good and it’s bad,it’s all a matter of taste, they might please a lot of people into old school, the band can play as it shows on the first three tracks but that groove sound they throw in on the last two tracks just didn’t click for me.On a high note,I really like the lyrical content the band sings about like on the last track about putting all these high authority fucks to the wall and killing them.I’ll leave it up to you because this died for me after the third track.
